Building a culture of access

When something is described as accessible, it simply means that everyone is able to use it. The accessibility of University websites and electronic information is not optional, it is a requirement. The concepts and practices provided here cover a wide range of topics, from web page accessibility to the necessary steps toward creating accessible documents and media. Though many of the concepts and practices apply specifically to courses, every aspect of digital information and web accessibility is important. All members of the campus community can help to build a culture of access by applying these practices to our everyday work.

For courses taught in a traditional classroom setting, individual student accommodation remains an important part of our inclusive campus. However, some individual accommodations require lead time and this may leave disabled students waiting for materials. Because of developments in digital and electronic technology, it is now possible to proactively build accessible content to provide a substantially equivalent experience.

Accommodation is reactive. Accessibility is proactive!

Accessible online content can be compared to physical wheelchair ramps and accessible entryways, it provides a digital pathway and allows all students to enter the course. When content is accessible, all students, regardless of background or ability, have equal access to the course.
